Does the 2017 Honda Ridgeline Offer Best-in-Class Fuel Economy?

November 15th, 2016 by

Honda RidgelineHonda has put to bed the myth of the gas-guzzling pickup truck, with the 2017 Honda Ridgeline offering some truly impressive mpg numbers among its peers. Montana drivers who are tired of having to choose between power and efficiency, we hope you’re as excited as we are. To give you an idea of just how rare it is for a truck to deliver so much power and do it for so little fuel, we compared the Ridgeline to some top competing trucks.

The Competition

The competition is fierce for a midsize truck that’s both capable and efficient, as a vehicle with plenty of power and fuel economy satisfies the everyday construction worker and the family truck driver alike. Before we get to the Ridgeline, here’s how three competitors look with regard to fuel efficiency:

  • 2016 Chevrolet Colorado: The Colorado was hailed as the next big midsize truck when it debuted, with fuel economy ratings of 22 mpg combined city/highway and a 200-hp 4-cylinder.
  • 2016 Toyota Tacoma: The Tacoma has a 159-hp 4-cylinder yet manages to be less efficient than the Chevy at 21 mpg combined.
  • 2016 Nissan Frontier: The 261-hp V6 of the Frontier certainly brings the power many truck drivers crave, but it’s at a cost—a fuel economy of 17 mpg combined.

Two 4-cylinder engines and a V6. You might expect one to be more powerful or more efficient than the Ridgeline, but that’s just not the case.

  • 2017 Honda Ridgeline: A 280-hp 3.5L V6 is under the hood of each Ridgeline, and two-wheel drive models earn an EPA-estimated 22 combined mpg.* If all-wheel drive is a priority, the Ridgeline leads all three of the competitors above with 21 mpg combined* to 20 mpg (Toyota and Chevy) and 17 mpg (Nissan).

We’ve tackled two big myths of the auto world, and the truck world in particular: A vehicle with high power is going to guzzle gas and you can’t have a truck that’s both powerful and efficient. Those myths might ring true for some pickups, but it’s clear the 2017 Honda Ridgeline plays by different rules.
